Honey Harvest part 4 – field trip
Jana organized a super field trip experience that took advantage of the honey extraction that was going on. There were 5 stations that different groups of kids rotated through in our house and garage.
station 1 – honey extraction – Here the kids got to see how the honey is extracted from the frames. Some were brave enough to try sampling the hot wax cappings to chew on and then dispose of later after the honey was gone. Each family got to bottle their own sample jar and I discussed various facts about bees and extracting.
station 2 – honey straws – Fill straws with honey and seal the ends for snacking on later.
station 3 – Read the book Busy Buzzers: Bees in Your Backyard, and watch the youtube video Bees: Animals for Children. Check out the bee poster as well.
station 4 – craft time making your own honeybee.
station 5 – Learn about the parts of the honeybee, bee puzzle, and do the bee waggle dance.
Here are a few photos. Thanks to my folks and other families for taking some pictures of this and the extraction process in general.
